About

Founded over 20 years ago, the Council of Immigration Judges was established in order to promote and maintain the judicial independence of Immigration Judges, Designated Immigration Judges, Senior Immigration Judges and Judges of the Upper Tribunal, and to promote the better administration of justice throughout the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal.

It aims to facilitate the exchange of views among all Immigration Judges, and to promote and represent their general interests including their terms and conditions of service with the senior judiciary and the Ministry of Justice.

It also considers existing and proposed legislation and rules and makes recommendations upon them. Moreover, it encourages the uniformity of court procedure and practice and provides a forum for the exchange of views and the promotion and maintenance of good fellowship among members.

The Council of Immigration Judges promotes fairness and impartiality throughout the immigration appeal process without regard to race, colour, nationality or ethnic origin, religious or political persuasion, gender or sexual orientation.

Moreover, the Council seeks to work with any International, Commonwealth or European Council of those judicially appointed to deal with immigration appeals or their equivalents.

In addition, at the discretion of the President, the Council may provide practical assistance to a member by way of representation in connection with any complaint, disciplinary action or threat of removal from office.
